ALTON BAY — Warren W. Hartwell Jr., 86, passed away Dec. 1, 2010.

Born Dec. 29, 1923 in New London, Conn., the son of Warren W. and Martha P. Hartwell, he was a graduate of Hudson High School in Hudson, Mass., and Wentworth Institute in Boston, Mass.

A United States Army Veteran of World War II, in The Battle of the Bulge, he was recipient of a Combat Infantry Badge, a Bronze Star Medal of Honor and a Purple Heart.

He and his wife resided in Swampscott, Mass., for 48 years and spent summers at their home on Lake Winnipesaukee in Alton Bay.

He was a 50-year member of the Masons, recently of William Sutton Lodge in Saugus, Mass., a former commander of the Military Order of Purple Heart, Salem Chapter, and former Commander of the Disabled American Veterans, Salem Chapter.

Warren enjoyed boating, gardening and being with his family, friends and brothers.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Clara J. (Heath) Hartwell; son, Steven, of Belmont, Calif., and daughter Lisa of Center Ossipee; and two nephews and a niece: Rick, David and Donna.

He was predeceased by his sister, Nancy Duncan.

Family and friends are welcome to a funeral on Saturday Dec. 4, 2010 at 11 a.m. at the Peaslee Alton Funeral Home, 12 School St., Alton, with the Rev. Larry Adams, pastor of the Community Church of Alton, officiating.

Interment will follow at the New Riverside Cemetery in Alton with military honors. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in his memory to the American Parkinson Disease Association or the charity of one's choice.
