IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Walter Edward
Brown
February 7, 1936 – March 23, 2026
Visitation
Following Visitation
Walter E. Brown, 90, passed away on March 23, 2026, surrounded by the family he spent a lifetime building, supporting, and loving. Born in Malden, Massachusetts to Lester and Elizabeth (Tomlinson) Brown, he grew up with a strong sense of responsibility and an eagerness to work; traits that would define every decade of his life.
Walter met the love of his life, Ann, when he was just 21. She swept him off his feet, and together they built a marriage that lasted 68 years. Their partnership was the steady center of a large and lively family, a home filled with noise, projects, laughter, and the kind of love that shows up every single day and around the very large dining room table that he built himself.
Walter began working at the age of 13, not out of necessity, but because he wanted to. From resetting bowling pins and caddying at local golf courses to working nights as a gas station manager during high school, he embraced every job with pride. After graduating, he served in the U.S. Navy and later worked as a truck driver, carpenter, mason tender, and laborer before discovering the trade that would shape the rest of his life.
In 1967, Walter moved his growing family to Sanbornville, New Hampshire, where he continued to hone his skills in carpentry and construction. In 1971, he founded Walter E. Brown Builder, later W.E. Brown & Sons, and spent more than two decades building homes, additions, and projects of every size alongside his sons. He was a master plumber and electrician, a craftsman who believed in doing things the right way, and a man who took immense pride in the work of his hands.
Walter’s career spanned an extraordinary 74 years. He worked alongside his sons, daughters, brothers in law, father in law, and eventually his grandchildren. His final chapters of work were spent with his sons at South Coast Builders and Yankee Electric, from which he retired at the age of 88, still sharp, still steady, still showing up every morning ready to go (and to play solitaire).
Beyond work, Walter gave generously to his community. He was a founding member of the local chapter of Little League Baseball long before there was any type of community recreation department to support such an endeavor. He coached and served as an umpire in that league for 17 years. He also served more than 15 years with the Lions Club—including two terms as president—and spent six years as School Board Chairman. At home, he was never without a project. There was always something to build, fix, or improve, and he approached each task with the same determination he brought to his career.
Walter loved golf, woodworking, and cheering for all New England sports teams. He found joy in simple things: a well cut board, a clean fairway shot, a game on the TV, enjoying a glass of wine with Ann in the sun, and a house full of family and fun.
He leaves behind his devoted wife, Ann, and the legacy they created together: ten children – Deborah (Paul), Walter Jr. (Sue), James (Erinne), (the late) Thomas, Daniel, Patrick (Tammy), Matthew (MaryBeth), Nancy (Eugene), Ronald (Amy), (the late) Susan, twenty five grandchildren, and twenty seven great grandchildren. His family was his greatest pride, and he carried that pride with him in every project, every long day of work, and every story.
Walter lived a life defined by loyalty, grit, humor, and heart. He showed his family what it meant to work hard, to take risks, to believe in yourself, and to keep going—even when the path was not easy. His presence will be deeply missed, but the lessons he taught and the love he gave will carry forward for generations.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, March 31st from 1:00–3:00 p.m. at Peaslee Funeral Home in Farmington, NH, with a Celebration of Life directly following at the Rochester Country Club. A private graveside service will take place later this spring when conditions allow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Walter to Great Bay Services, 23 Cataract Ave, Suite 1, Dover, NH 03820, or online at greatbayservices.org.
