Obituary

Shirley Jean Menter, age 75 of Emmons Lane in Lebanon, ME, died February 15, 2014 at Hyder House Hospice with her family at her side. Born January 24, 1939 in Kane, PA. She was the daughter of Carroll and Thelma Fowler. Shirley at the age of 14 contracted polio and was in an "iron lung" for many months. Her will to live and zest for life became apparent at this young age as she worked to recover. She never let her illness define her life. She graduated from Warren High School, Warren, PA and Penn State University, State College, PA where she earned a BA in elementary education. Shirley taught school in Pennsylvania, California, and New Hampshire. After leaving teaching she worked at Foster's Daily Democrat.

Shirley was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, traveling, dining out and her dog Tiki.

Shirley is survived by husband of 30 years Albert Menter, Lebanon, ME, sons Darren Maxwell (Shari) Rochester, NH; Brett Maxwell, Rochester, NH; Jason Menter (Brooke), Saco, ME; Justin Menter (Elisabeth), Berwick ME and brother Richard Fowler (Shaanette) Cuyahoga Falls, OH and 8 grandchildren.

Shirley will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday February 20, 2014 at 11:00am in the chapel of the Peaslee Funeral Home 24 Central Street in Farmington, NH with calling hour from 10-11am. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to the American Lung Assoc.,or Shriner's Hospital for Children or a charity of your choice, to express condolences, please visit: www.peasleefuneralhome.com
