Obituary

Farmington, NH

Roland Glen Hill, 68, of Farmington NH died on April 8 th , 2022, due to multiple health complications. Roland was born on January 30, 1954, the first child of Alfred J Hill and Dorothy (Smith) Hill, in Lawrence, MA.

Roland's family moved to Middleton, NH when he was a young boy and he attended Farmington schools from elementary through high school. He was the oldest of the ten Hill children that resided on Middleton hill. Roland "down the" Hill, as he frequently referred to himself, was described by many as "Quite a character, friendly, funny, and talented". He loved music his entire life and began singing and playing the guitar as a teenager.  His singing took him to compete in the NH All State boys' choir where he won a first-place spot for the northeast region and performed with the US All National Choir in Atlantic City, New Jersey.  During and after high school, Roland and his good friends, Steven Joy, Mike Henderson, and Jimmy Downs, started a band and played together locally as "The North Union Band".

Roland worked a variety of jobs but was most well-known as a carpenter/general contractor working on many, many homes in the area. He was known as a hard worker that was reasonable and fair.  He enjoyed fishing, racing, loved the Patriots football team and beer! He liked to laugh and enjoyed pleasing others. He was a member of several private clubs, was a frequent visitor at Smokey's Lantern, enjoyed playing cribbage and donated regularly to several non-profit groups including, veterans' programs, Wounded Warrior Project, Audubon Society and more.

He most recently lived in the Trotting Park housing complex in Farmington, NH, for nearly a decade, where his neighbors described him as friendly, funny and wonderful with the children. They said that he always made sure to have something for the children and he would visit with them as they played outdoors. A handmade Christmas card found in his apartment, addressed to 'The Candy Man', was a testament to how the children appreciated his presence and kindness. Several residents have expressed how much he will be missed there.

Roland leaves behind four children, Laura Bigda, Tina Dison, Nicholas Hill and Heidi Hancock; four brothers Alfred Hill Jr.; Craig Hill; Scott Hill, Thomas Hill; four sisters Karen Brown; Ruth Hill; Elaine Shippee and Brenda Tarmey-Stroud and his mother, Dorothy Rogers. Roland also had several grandchildren, great grandchildren and dozens of cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Penelope and his father, Alfred James Hill Sr.

Roland will surely be missed by many. We welcome you to attend a memorial service and celebration of life reception at 1:00PM on Sunday, April 24th, 2022, at the Moose Lodge in Milton, NH. All who knew and cared for Roland are welcome.

The family would like to thank all that helped care for Roland, especially through his last years. He had several friends that looked in on him, helped with chores and visited to keep him company, but especially to his good friends and neighbors Wayne and Donna, who went above and beyond friendship to ensure that Roland had absolutely everything that he wanted and needed, we send a special heart felt thank you!
