Roger Alan Libby age 78 of 424 Applebee Road, Milton Mills, NH passed away peacefully at Wentworth Douglass Hospital on September 29,2026 after a battle with Lewy Body Dementia.
Roger was born in Portland Maine and predeceased by his parents; Maurice and Patricia (Jaggard) Libby and his brother, Steven Robert Libby. He is survived by his wife Kymberly (Dawson) Libby, his 7 children, 7 grandchildren and his sister Patricia Libby.
Roger spent his early childhood in Portland, Maine, until he moved with his family to “The Farm” in Milton Mills, New Hampshire. He attended the little red schoolhouse before continuing his education at Nute High School, graduating in 1966.
Roger enlisted in the United States Air Force after Graduation. He served in Korea as a heavy equipment mechanic. After completing his military service, he attended school in Nashville, Tennessee, before returning to New Hampshire to raise a family.
Roger worked for Seward Trucking Company until in the early 1980s, when he was hired at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and spent the next 20 years working there. He also served in the Air National Guard, stationed at Pease Air Force Base. Roger took pride in his work, had a lifelong passion for machinery, heavy equipment, and turning a good idea into his next project. Roger had a vision, he dreamed of building his log home and owning land where he could operate a salvage yard.
He retired from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in 1998. But retirement, as it turned out, was more of a suggestion than a permanent arrangement. He served on the town zoning board and volunteered as both a firefighter and a police officer, continuing to find ways to stay busy and give back to his community.
Roger often liked to say, he was “looking for someone with too much money” when he found Alky at AXL Trucking in Portsmouth. It was another opportunity and Roger was never one to pass up a chance to get back to work.
While Roger was “trying out” retirement, we purchased a house in Virginia to renovate. Over the next ten years, we made countless trips back and forth between Virginia and New Hampshire, creating plenty of memories along the way. One of the most memorable was an epic weekend motorcycle trip to ride the Tail of the Dragon near Maggie Valley, North Carolina. Roger loved traveling, riding motorcycles, and discovering new places. Wherever he went, he was always searching for the best breakfast spot and a good slice of lemon meringue pie. He also had very particular standards when it came to sausage biscuits and gravy, once describing the right consistency as “thick enough to grease a fifth wheel plate.”
The perfect description of Roger: practical, particular, and never short on an opinion.
In 2016, Roger lost his dream home to a fire. By grace, no one was home at the time. The next four years of hard work building a new house meant taking on yet another major project and turning a difficult chapter into an opportunity to start again. Roger eventually traded his two wheels for three, affectionately calling his new motorcycle “the tricycle.” He continued riding for several more years, holding on to a passion that had brought him so much enjoyment.
Roger was stubborn and fiercely independent. When he was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, he fought from day one to continue doing the things that had always been part of who he was. He kept driving equipment, working on machines, starting projects, and accumulating as many toys as possible. He was determined to live life on his own terms for as long as he could, and that determination remained a defining part of his character.
Roger never wanted anyone to fuss over a funeral. His idea was a party, a gathering of family and friends to share stories, laugh about old times, remember the adventures, and send him off on his next journey. It seems only fitting to celebrate Roger in the way he would have wanted: surrounded by the people who knew him, loved him, and have a story or two to tell about him. He lived life his own way, worked hard, served his country and community, chased his dreams, explored the open road, and rarely stayed still for long. He leaves behind memories of a life full of determination, adventure, projects, and plenty of personality.
Goodbye from this world, Roger. Safe travels to wherever you may land. May the roads be open, the machinery run smoothly, the projects never end, the breakfast be worth the stop, and the lemon meringue pie be just right.
A memorial and send-off celebrating Roger’s life will be held on May 16, 2027 @ 2:00 pm
424 Applebee Road Milton Mills NH 03852 . Reminders will be sent in the spring.
