CONCORD – Rhoda W. Nute, 87, died Tuesday, December 20, 2011
Rhoda was born January 11, 1924, in Farmington, NH, the daughter of Harry and Helen (Wadleigh) Nute. Her childhood was spent in Farmington; she then went on to receive a BS degree from Boston University – Sargent College and a M. Ed. From Penn. State. Her love of the outdoors and physical activities led her to a career in recreational education. After teaching in California and at Colby-Sawyer College in New London, NH, in the mid – 1950s she worked as a recreational director for the USAF in Japan and then France. Afterwards Rhoda had a 20 year career with the YWCA as program director in Boston, Seattle, Rochester, NY, and Charlotte, NC. Returning to NH in 1979, Rhoda worked in Wolfeboro directing a federal grant project, which coordinated a human service council for Carroll County. When the grant expired after 2 years, she moved to Portland, ME to become the director of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in southern Maine for 7 years.
Now in her mid-60s, Rhoda retired, but her strong sense of adventure and her desire to help people caused her to join the Peace Corps, where she served for 2 years as an adult education director in Swaziland, Africa. Returning to Wolfeboro in 1990, she was active in the choir of All Saints Church, volunteered at the Chamber of Commerce, and helped found the Active Older Adults (AOA) program which met each Wednesday to hike, paddle, cross country ski or snowshoe.
In 2004, Rhoda moved to the Havenwood Retirement Center in Concord, NH, still staying busy with volunteer activities with her fellow residents.
Her sister, Charlotte N. Pelletier, predeceased her in Dec. 2008. Her brother, Eugene F. Nute, predeceased her in March 2009. Her nephews and nieces are Stephanie (Nute) Hicks, Jonathan Nute, and Elizabeth (Nute) Bridges, in NH; and Thomas Pelletier, Andrew Pelletier and Helen (Pelletier) Spritz, in Maine.
Rhoda was an expert skier, was devoted to Camp Nellie Huckins in Ossipee, NH and is remembered by her friends and relatives as always being ready to lead impromptu hikes in the beautiful NH countryside. She would even yodel!
A memorial service will be held at her grave in the spring at the Pine Grove Cemetery in Farmington, NH. Arrangements are in the care of Peaslee Funeral Home, 24 Central Street, Farmington, NH, to express condolences, please visit: www.peasleefuneralhome.com
