Obituary

Gilmanton Iron Works, NH

Louise Ann (Sawicki) Fountain of Gilmanton Iron Works, N.H. died May 18 at Pleasant View Nursing Home in Concord, N.H. She had entered the nursing home only the day before, following a short hospitalization. She was 89.

Born in Palmer, Mass. on August 19, 1926, she was the daughter of Polish immigrants Francis and Anna (Badorek) Sawicki. The youngest of six children, she lost her mother when she was 8 years old, and grew close to her much-older siblings, who doted on her and served as surrogate parents.

She graduated from Framingham State College in 1947, where she majored in home economics, lettered on the varsity basketball team and danced under the tutelage of modern-dance legend Jose Limon. She married in 1949, and while raising five children in Palmer and Sturbridge, Mass,
worked as a seamstress, making custom draperies and slipcovers for a range of clients across Western Massachusetts.

Following her husband's retirement from the Massachusetts Electric Company in 1987, the couple moved to their vacation home on Crystal Lake in Gilmanton Iron Works. In retirement she tended to her extensive gardens, followed the news on television religiously and enthusiastically, and did the daily crossword puzzle until the final weeks of her life. She took her greatest joy in the visitors who frequented her lake home, from relatives and life-long friends, to her children and grandchildren, to the hundreds of songbirds and hummingbirds that came to her many feeders.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Francis (Norm) Fountain of Gilmanton Iron Works; by her five children, Charles, and his wife Cathy of Cambridge, Mass; James and his wife Deb of East Lyme, Conn; Gregory of Gilmanton Iron Works; Robert and his wife Mariane of Woodbridge, Conn; Maureen and her husband Michael Quinn of Arlington, Mass; and by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be said on Monday May 23 at 10 a.m. at St. Katharine Drexel Church in Alton N.H. Burial at a later date at St. Thomas the Apostle Cemetery in Palmer.
