Joan Funk, a devoted mother, grandmother, dedicated public servant, and cherished friend, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on March 7, 2026 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 83 years old.Born in 1942 in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, Joan was the beloved daughter of John and Ruth Matteson. She grew up in Rhode Island before building her life and legacy in New Hampshire, where she resided in Farmington for the last 45+years.Joan raised three sons with unwavering love and strength: David Funk(wife Diane), Donovan Funk, and Michael Funk (wife Susan).Joan was predeceased by her parents, John and Ruth Matteson; her brothers, John Matteson (Jack) and Chester (Chet) Matteson, and her son, Donovan Funk. She is survived by her sons David Funk of Farmington, NH and Michael Funk of Rochester, NH, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.A woman of deep commitment to her community, Joan retired from the Farmington School District after many years of service. She gave tirelessly to her town, serving as a Selectman and leaving a lasting impact through her leadership and dedication.Joan was proud that she was one of the founders of the Farmington High School Football Program. She was a constant volunteer in youth sports, where her enthusiasm, encouragement, and presence touched countless young lives and created memories that will endure for generations.In her personal time, Joan found joy in antiquing adventures with her best friend of more than 50 years, Shirley Fitzgerald. Their shared passion for treasures old and new brought laughter and connection through decades of friendship.Joan loved her proclaimed son Steve Edwards and forever cherished the special bond they shared always laughing.She loved her dear friends she met with every Thursday at Wendy’s and spoke of this often all the way to her last day of life.Joan held a particularly special place in her heart for her grandson Jordan Funk (wife Mikaela) and her great-grandchildren whose energy and love brought her endless delight.Joan’s life was defined by service, family, friendship, laughter, and quiet strength. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her imprint on her family, her town, and her community will live on.A huge thank you to the God sent people of Cornerstone Visiting Nurses Association (VNA)with emphasis on Joan’s nursing team lead by RN Grace and LPN Susan. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, March 12, 2026, at 11am at the First Congregational Church, 400 Main Street Farmington, NH. Private interment will take place at a later date in North Kingstown, Rhode Island.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Cornerstone VNA Rochester, NH.
