Obituary

Alton Bay, NH

Jane E. (Daley) Cumming passed away on Friday, March 18, 2022, after a valiant battle for over 12 years against Mantle Cell Lymphoma and finally against COVID pneumonia.

Jane was born in Boston, MA on September 24, 1948, to parents Richard B. Daley and Doris M. (Goodwin) Daley. She grew up in Bedford, MA, attending the Bedford schools and graduated with the Bedford High School Class of 1966. She enjoyed playing sports, most particularly Field Hockey and Softball.

Jane attended Chandler School for Women in Boston and graduated in the Class of 1968.

In November of 1969, Jane married David Cumming. David was stationed in Alaska with the United States Air Force. Four days after the marriage, Jane and David packed up her 1969 VW bus (no, not a

hippy van adorned with flowers) and drove 4,800 miles to Eielson AFB AK, just outside of Fairbanks. Their daughter Janine was born in Alaska.

The next journey was to Mountain Home ID to the Air Force Base there. Their son Jason was born there, and when he was 2 ½ months old and Janine was 3 years old, David was transferred to Thailand for a year-long tour of duty. Jane stayed in Mountain Home and took care of all things on the home front.

On David's return home, they next moved to Bossier City, LA. David separated from the Air Force and went to work for the FAA. Jane worked for a while, and then volunteered at a Roman Catholic Church and was a stay-at-home Mom. She was a Girl Scout Brownie leader.

In 1981, the family moved back to New England, settling in Billerica, MA. Jane first worked for a Food Distribution Company in Woburn, and then worked for a dental office in Wilmington. This started her work in the medical field.

In the late 1980s, the next adventure was a move to Clifton Park, NY where Jane worked again in the medical field. She started in a dental office, and then worked for an orthopedic surgeon in his office. Finally, she worked for a pain management specialist until she and David moved to Alton Bay, NH to help care for his mother.

Once settled in Alton Bay, Jane went to work for Dr. Denise Merritt, the local doctor in town. She started working on the front desk and soon became the office manager. After Huggins Hospital bought the medical practice, Jane became the practice coordinator for what became known as Alton Family Medicine. Along with her own office, Jane also helped to manage other offices within Huggins' family of practices whenever needed.

In November 2009, Jane was diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma and in early 2010 had her first round of chemotherapy. The life expectancy was not good at the time, but Jane said that she would go through any chemo as long as she could maintain a quality of life. This became her mantra. Over the years, she managed to out-live all the life expectancies, and to her family, she became the miracle mom.

Over 10 years ago, she retired and enjoyed retirement. She played golf (a lot) and enjoyed her time playing in New Hampshire Women's Golf Association tournaments and with the friends she made along the way. She got to play on a couple of Tri-State NH teams in competition against other teams from Maine and Vermont. And of course, she managed to strike up friendships with some members of those teams. She and David enjoyed boating on Lake Winnipesaukee for several years. She and David were also able to travel some, notably to Universal Orlando and also to Pompano Beach. Last year, she and David bought a timeshare in Pompano Beach that overlooked the ocean. She did get to enjoy it last year.

She loved doing counted cross-stitch needlework (and did beautiful work) and was a very good knitter. She and her sister Carol owned the yarn shop Knit, Purl, and Beyond in Wolfeboro, NH for around 4 years.

Jane was a fighter and fought to the very end. She was an inspiration to all who knew her, and her spirit will be missed by all.

She was predeceased by her parents and by her son Jason, who died in April 2019. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, 5 months and 3 days (but who's counting, right Jane?), daughter Janine Duclos and her husband Bill, her son Rob and his fiancée Jenifer, her sister Carol Smith, daughter-in-law Lynne Cumming, 8 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren.
