Obituary

Herbert Richard "Dick" Canney passed away Saturday evening June the 16th, 2012, he was 82. The son of Victor and Isadore Canney, he was born and raised in Milton New Hampshire. Preceded in death by his wife Helen, his parents, his brother Victor Jr. (passed in childhood), Sherman (Korea), Eddie, Bobby, and Vincent. He is survived by two sons, Russell Canney of Abilene Texas, Charles Canney and his wife Carla, and one sister June Vitello. Dad joined the US Army in 1947 and served 2 years in Japan, returned home and was honorably discharged. He again joined the Army in 1950 and served in the Korean conflict as an X-ray technician and ambulance driver, again honorably discharged, Applied for OCS in the Air Force in 1953. He was stationed in Waco Texas for pilots training where he met and married Helen in 1954, He was Baptized into the Christian faith by Chaplain James Carlburg. He trained as a navigator after pilots training and in 1960 was sent to Turkey during the Cuban missile crisis, he flew 3 tours out of Thailand from 1966 to 1969 during the Vietnam conflict. He survived the crash of a C130 in 1969 and retired from active duty in 1970, Dad flew over 15,000 hrs in the air during his career, more than 5,000 in C130s and received the Air Medal for meritorious service. He spent his retirement in New Hampshire raising frogs in the pond he built on his land. He took care of those around him and those he loved even at the expense of himself. He will be greatly missed.

Family and friends are welcome to a graveside service on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at Prospect Hill Cemetery in W. Lebanon, Maine at 11:00am with Pastor Brad Trafton officiating and military honors by the United States Air Force.
