Obituary

Henry Lawrence Imke, known by all as Larry, shortened by some to Lar or Laa, was born to Henry and Dorothy Imke on Long Island, NY. Larry died peacefully in his home overlooking Lovell Lake at age 73 on September 14th, 2022 after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Larry was a graduate of Penn State University and majored in Electrical Design Technology. As a Cordovox accordion virtuoso, he worked his way through college most notably as part of a rock/pop band called The Epics.

After college, Larry was hired by a copper tube company in Altoona, PA called Small Tube Products and eventually became the Eastern Regional Sales Manager. He had the privilege of interacting with a multitude of companies to provide elite copper products for over 16 years.

Larry began the annual summer migration to Lovell Lake in Sanbornville, NH with his family when he was two. "The lake," as everyone called it, was a place of healing, gathering, and water skiing. The setting became so ingrained in Larry's DNA that he was determined to buy property and provide similar summers for his own future family.

When he was 23 he purchased a camp at the end of a dirt road, a place that became a beloved backdrop for the rest of his life. In his young adulthood, summers were spent at the camp "raising hell" with good friends. Years later, he enjoyed the blessing of time with his family at their dream lake house, at the end of the same dirt road.

At 35, Larry met Marilyn; she was a teller at the bank where he did business. In addition to his charming personality, he used his smile, twinkling blue eyes, and good head of hair to finesse two dates with her - in a single day. Marilyn became the Mal to his Lar when they got married in 1986, creating a small family with Tommy, Marilyn's 8-year-old son. Together they founded their family business of 32 years, Seacoast Mini Storage. With their growing business came their growing household; the family of three became a family of five (plus their pup Maddie) when Lauren and Bea came into the world.

Larry was outspoken about his journey to sobriety and lived a life in faithful recovery until the end - 16 years, 7 months, and 19 days. Those familiar with alcoholism, or any addiction, know that it can take many set-backs before making a lasting change. Larry had his share, but the most transformative came in 2006 when he thought he'd lose his family if he didn't beat his addiction. From that point forward, he dove headfirst into the 12 step program, named God as his higher power, and was shepherded by the most humble and humorous of people. Larry became a leader in the AA and Celebrate Recovery communities using his hurts, hang-ups, and habits as an example for others. One of his dearest confidants in the program said he, "made the journey so much easier for so many. He was a source of humor and reality." Larry's newfound sober life included becoming an active member in his faith community, Bethany Church in Greenland, NH and Kittery Point, ME, where he became an integral member of the church's marriage ministry and Celebrate Recovery program.

Larry's years of smoking and substance use led to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), an illness that caused him much discomfort in his last years and placed many limitations on his life. In 2011, he was diagnosed with cancer for the first of four times. Larry was a person of routine, precision, and meticulousness, and these traits were transparent in the way he went about treatment. He always looked to the future, and this mindset was a driving force as he fought his fight. While most of the last

11 years were devoted to his treatment, he found time to retire, enjoy his winters in Florida, travel the country with Mal, and spend summers at his beloved lake house hosting his children, grandchildren, and friends who became family.

Larry is survived by: His bride of 36 years, Marilyn T. (Perigny) Imke, his three children: Thomas "Tom" Lloyd and partner Kellie Sweat Darnell, Lauren Park and partner Jong Kwan Park, and Bea Imke, his 9 grandchildren (Zachary, Andrew, Wesley, Jared, Andrew, Joshua, Eleanor, Josephine, and Annette), and his brother Thomas "Tom" G. Imke and wife Ellen Draegert.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, October 8th, at Bethany Church, 500 Breakfast Hill Road, Greenland, NH, at 10:30 am.
