Helen L. Abbott, 91, of Maple Street, Union, died Saturday February 19, 2011, at home.

She was born October 14, 1919, in West Milton, NH, the daughter of John Alden Grace and Flora Mattie Grace and the stepdaughter of Burton Gould.

Helen was a 1936 graduate of Rochester High School and received her teaching degree from Plymouth Teachers College in 1939. She Married R. Emerson Abbott on June 23, 1939. Emerson served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific.

She began her 51 year teaching career in a one room school house in Water Village, NH. Over the years she taught in Union, Milton, Milton Mills, Farmington and East Rochester. Her love of teaching was central to her life and her skill as a caring and devoted teacher was evidenced by the admiration of her many students.

In 1952 she attended Conservation Camp for Teachers at Lost River and it became her life long interest both in her teaching and personal life. In 1954 she wrote a conservation pageant which was presented as an 8th grade graduation program and published by the Soil Conservation Service of Washington, DC.

She was a member of the Reunion Grange, Order of the Eastern Star, VFW Auxiliary, Strafford County Retired Teachers, State Retired Teachers, and the National Education Association.

Helen was an active member of the Union Congregational Church where she taught Sunday School and was in the choir and was a bell ringer. She was also a member of the Women's Fellowship.

She was predeceased by her husband of 51 years in 1990, a brother John Grace, step-father Burton Gould and daughter in law Cindy Abbott.

She is survived by her three children, her daughter Susan Soucy and husband Tom of Union and two sons John Abbott and wife Diana Degen of Center Barnstead and Brian Abbott of Union; five grandchildren Stacey Taylor of Denver, NC, John Abbott of Temple, NH, Ryan Abbott of Union, NH, Shane Soucy of Union, NH and Heather Soucy of Oak Bluffs, MA; and four great grandchildren, also many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours are Tuesday from 5-8pm at Peaslee Funeral Home, 24 Central Street, Farmington, NH. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 on Wednesday, February 23, 2011 at Union Congregational Church on Main Street in Union, NH with Rev. John Babson, pastor, officiating.
