Obituary

Harold Stewart Martin, age 79, of Crystal Lake Road, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026, at his home in Gilmanton Iron Works, New Hampshire, while playing ball with his beloved dogs.

He was born on July 21,1946, in Salem, Massachusetts, the son of Harold S. and Martha W. (Clemons) Martin. He grew up and attended school in Swampscott, Massachusetts, and went on to earn his undergraduate degree from Bates College in Maine.

Following graduation, Harold, better known as “Marty,” began his teaching career at Kents Hill School, where he developed a lifelong passion for travel and service to others. He later served as a teacher with the Peace Corps in the Ivory Coast, an experience that deeply shaped his worldview. Marty was an exceptionally kind and generous man—someone who truly embodied what it means to be a good person. He cared deeply for others and consistently put those less fortunate before himself. Upon returning, he resumed teaching at Kents Hill before enlisting in the United States Air Force, where he served as a lab technician. After completing his military service, he earned a Master’s degree in Education from the University of New Hampshire.

During this time, he met his wife, Jean, in his hometown of Swampscott. They moved to Andover, Massachusetts to raise a family. Marty went on to teach for 30 years in Merrimack, New Hampshire, where he retired, and later continued his career for an additional five years in North Reading, Massachusetts. Even after retiring from teaching, he remained committed to helping others, volunteering at Concord Hospital, where he greeted patients and assisted those in need.

Harold, was a loving husband, father, and dedicated educator. When you spoke with him, you had his full attention. He had a quick wit and a warm sense of humor that brought smiles to all who knew him. He loved swimming and both water and snow skiing, and he was especially passionate about international travel—particularly introducing students to new cultures. After retirement he took great pride in planting and maintaining his flower gardens. He cherished time spent with his family at his home on Crystal Lake and never took its beauty for granted. In recent years, he found great joy in spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Jean M. (Koopman) Martin; his son and daughter-in-law, Seth and Meaghan Martin; and his two grandchildren.

A private remembrance of his life will be held at a future date. Donations may be made in his name to: World Central Kitchen.
