Gladys Hawthorne Martin, age 94, formerly of Farmington, NH passed away at Langdon Place in Dover, NH on May 3, 2021 after a lengthy illness.
Gladys was born February 7, 1927 in Detroit, MI, the daughter of William A. & Patricia M. (Peterson) Furby. On Christmas Eve in 1948 she was united in marriage to Lyle O. Martin. They began their early life in Detroit, and eventually moved to Tucson, Arizona where they raised their three children. Their life together took them to many of the western states for Lyle's job requirements. Eventually they retired to Colorado. After his passing in 1990, Gladys moved to New Hampshire to be near her daughters.
Gladys was a homemaker for most of her life. Her early careers included key punch operator, department store clerk and medical transcriber. She was a founding member of St. Michael's Church in Rochester, NH. Gladys loved the Lord with all her heart. She was active in the church choir and singing hymns brought her great joy. She led the Daughters of Ruth Altar Guild for many years. She also sat on vestry, and attended many bible studies. Gladys was a talented seamstress and made most of her own clothing as well as her husband's and children's. She had a great love of the outdoors and was a keen observer of nature. She could coax flowers to bloom in her gardens wherever she lived. For over thirteen years her beloved cat Chloe was her constant companion.
Gladys was the last surviving child of nine siblings. She was preceded in death by her husband Lyle O. Martin of Tucson, AZ, her parents William A. and Patricia M. Furby, brothers Richard A., Kenneth W., Robert E., Donald L., David Bruce, Truman G., and sisters Kathleen G., Norah L., and Phyllis A.
Gladys is survived by her son Lee O. Martin, of Tucson, AZ, and daughters Susan Randall and her husband Clayton, and Jean Charette and her husband Reginald, both of New Durham, NH. Also a grandson Benjamin Randall and his fiance Allison Willis, and three great-grandchildren, Caleb, Bryson and Jacob Randall, all of Saranac, MI. As well as many nephews, nieces, great nephews and great nieces.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 8, 2021 at 10:00 am at Peaslee Funeral Home in Farmington, NH. There will be no calling hours. For online condolences please visit www.peasleefuneralhome.com
