Farmington – Francis Robert Mooney, age 98, died Tuesday July 8, 2015 at Frisbie Memorial Hospital. He was born July 27, 1916 in East Dorset, Vermont, son of Francis Joseph Mooney originally of Leominster, Massachusetts and Geneva Perry of Manchester, Vermont.
At the age of three months his family moved from East Dorset, Vt. to Farmington NH after a fire destroyed the G F Mooney & Sons wood turning mill. During the trip in the family open touring car, Francis slept in a bureau drawer at the historic Daniel Webster House. Upon arrival in Farmington, the company was reestablished on South Main St. operated by George F. and Francis J. Mooney, and later by Francis R. Mooney himself.
He graduated from Farmington High School in 1934 and Dartmouth College in 1938. At Dartmouth he earned a degree in liberal arts and was a member of the Gamma Delta Chi Fraternity. Upon completing his formal education, Francis joined G F Mooney & Sons to learn the family business. He spent over thirty years there and upon retirement held the position of President / General Manager.
Francis was married on June 27, 1942 to Mildred Peasley of Hillsboro, NH. Together they had six children, four of which are still living. The family grew up in Farmington and in 1967 moved to Locke Lake Colony on Francis and Mildred's twenty fifth wedding anniversary.
Francis held several positions in his semi-retirement including Manager of Locke Lake Colony, General Manager of Duchano Realty & Construction and returning as Financial Manager of Locke Lake Colony. He acquired his real estate license, which was instrumental in his success in all these ventures. He formerly retired in October 1985.
Francis wintered in Ft. Myers, Florida for many years, which was where he met and married Virginia Brock on April 19, 1986. Virginia was a New Hampshire native from Rochester, NH. Together they wintered in Florida and South Carolina and in 1994 relocated during summers to the Farmington area.
Francis was an original founding member and served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Farmington Kiwanis Club. He also served as a Director of the Wood Turners and Shapers Association, Boston, Massachusetts. He was President of the New England Club of Ft. Myers, Florida. Francis sang in the choir of St Peters Church, Farmington as well as held the office of President of the Holy Name Society and member of the Parish Council.
Hobbies included wood working, crossword puzzles and reading. Francis held his private pilot license and owned a Piper Colt for many years. He had a great love for boats, most notably his grandfathers 30' Laker.
Francis is survived by his four children, Catherine Place and spouse Robert of Farmington NH, Norma Milne and spouse Val of Concord, NH, James Mooney of Concord, NH, and Lawrence Mooney of Bow, NH. Two children predeceased him, Brian who died shortly after birth and Joan Pearson of Lancaster, NH who died on December 15, 1982. He also leaves two sisters, Virginia Briggs of Pittsford, NY and Elizabeth Nelson of Cape Coral, Florida. His brother George who died at age one predeceased him. Survivors also include twelve grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial mass will be held at 10am on Saturday, July 25, 2015 at St. Peter Catholic Church, Central St. Farmington, NH. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of ones choice.
