Francis “Fran” McAteer, 69, of Alton, New Hampshire, passed away peacefully at home on October 26, 2026. Born in Glasgow, Scotland, on January 22, 1957, to John and Bridget McAteer, he immigrated to the United States at a young age and was raised in Revere and Everett, Massachusetts. He graduated from Malden Catholic High School and Boston College, becoming the first member of his family to attend college before going on to earn two master's degrees.

Francis enjoyed a distinguished 40-year career as a microbiologist in the biotechnology industry where he earned the respect and admiration of colleagues. A true Renaissance man, Fran was knowledgeable, resourceful, and endlessly curious. He had a remarkable ability to solve problems and was always willing to help others by sharing his knowledge and experience. Though he achieved much throughout his life, nothing brought Fran more pride or happiness than his friends and family.

Soccer was a lifelong passion. Coached by his father from a young age, Fran spent countless hours on the field with friends, especially Steve and Dave, playing for Malden Catholic and Boston College. Years later, he took great pride in coaching his own son and passing on his lifelong love of the game.

The qualities that made him a great coach - patience, encouragement, and a willingness to always show up for others - defined the way he lived. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Fran was kind, generous, and someone his family could always count on. He showed his love through his actions and would do anything for those closest to him. Whether helping solve a problem, offering advice, or firing up the grill to make his famous steak tips, Fran found joy in taking care of the people he loved.

In retirement, Fran cherished time with his family at Half Moon Lake, living his best “Grampie” life. His grandchildren, William and Eliza, brought him tremendous joy. Whether playing Dinosaur Island with William or letting Eliza paint his nails, he treasured every moment with them, creating memories his family will hold dear for years to come.

Although our hearts are heavy, we are grateful for the years we shared with Fran and for the memories he leaves behind. His kindness, wisdom, and love touched countless lives. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and forever loved. Francis is survived by his beloved wife of 41 years, Kathleen McAteer; his son, John, and daughter-in-law, Miranda; his cherished grandchildren, William and Eliza; his loving sister, Margaret Cifuni, her husband, Joe, and their daughter, Bridget; and many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, John and Bridget McAteer.

Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Katharine Drexel Parish, 40 Hidden Springs Road, Alton, NH 03809. A Funeral Mass will then be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. presided over by Father Cole, followed by burial at Riverview Cemetery, 95 Main Street, Barnstead, NH 03225. Flowers are welcome.
