Obituary

Alton, New Hampshire

Foster Tarleton Jones, age 75, was surrounded by his family when he passed away on August 26, 2017 at his home in Alton, New Hampshire.

Foster grew up in New Castle, NH and delighted in telling (and retelling!) stories of his happy childhood on the island. He attended Portsmouth High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Soil and Water Science at the University of New Hampshire. It was at UNH, in Dan Valenza's woodworking classes, where Foster discovered his passion for working with wood. After college, he taught math and science at Milton Junior High School. He then worked for his father Robert Jones doing carpentry in Portsmouth and New Castle. He and several other artisans had a group shop on Bow Street in Portsmouth. He built masts for boatbuilders. Foster and a partner began "Housesmith's", a post and beam home building company in York, Maine. He went on to work by himself for several years, building houses and making furniture and cabinets. His skilled touch can be found in homes, restaurants, bars and theaters in the Seacoast area. In 1985, Foster and his brother's in law started "Maine Coast Builders" in York, Maine. In 1995, he followed his heart and built a work shop at his home in North Berwick, Maine, where he worked for 20 years, until he moved his shop and family to Alton, New Hampshire.

He is survived by his wife of 30 years: Rhona (Barden) Jones and his sons: Eyan Jones of Limerick, Maine and Arik Jones of Rye, NH, and his daughter Ruby Jones of Alton, NH.

Foster loved his occupation. He loved New New Castle. He loved the natural world. He loved books. He loved music. He loved astronomy. He loved a challenge. He loved what was to be discovered in the universe. He loved his three children and he loved his three wives.

Foster was a kind, humble and honorable man. He was rare in his contentment and fulfillment in life. He was eager to help others and generous with his knowledge of his trade.

There will be a memorial gathering for Foster on the New Castle Commons on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 10am. Cremation care by Peaslee Alton Funeral Home.
