Ervin "Sam" Gray, age 85, of 12 Water Street, died Saturday, November 2, 2013, peacefully in his sleep. He was born December 15, 1927, in Farmington the son of the late Samuel J. and Mildred R. (Marshall) Gray. On November 13, 1947, he was honorably discharged from the United States Navy, where he was awarded a victory medal. Ervin resided in Farmington his whole life, where he was self employed as a general contractor. Prior to that he worked for Donald Vaughn and Witherells Dairy,as a dairyman. After retiring as a general contractor, Sam was employed by the Farmington Country Club as the superintendent of grounds for 12 years. Sam enjoyed working for 2 summers at Cameron's Garden Center, then he retired permanently. He was an avid outdoorsman, which included camping, skiing, gardening, and walking his canine companion Pepper. He served as a 500 boys club coach and a scout leader for several years. Members of his family include his wife of 63 years, Sally Gray of Farmington, a son Robert Gray and wife Ginny of Farmington. A daughter Pamela Gerry and husband Kendall of Alfred Maine. Two brothers Chester and Wilbur Gray both of Rochester. Eleven grandchildren, Seven great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild, also many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter Linda Gray Macdonald in 2004, also four brothers and two sisters. The family would like to thank Colonial Hill Nursing Home, Cornerstone VNA, as well as his granddaughter Tammi Tufts for the compassionate and quality care provided for the last couple of years.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday November 5, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Pine Grove Cemetery in Farmington, with military honors.
