Elaine M. Conboy

Elaine Marie Conboy, 87, died peacefully at home on February 27, 2026. She was born on May 4, 1938, the daughter of Ira and Alma (Forest) Butler. She was raised In Medford, Massachusetts, and after graduating from high school, went on to get her Bachelor’s degree from Salem State College. She met the love of her life there, the late John T. Conboy, and they were married for 60 years. Elaine taught elementary school until she retired, and after retiring, she continued to tutor students in reading.

Elaine and her husband John moved from Lynn, Massachusetts with their son John, and the couple owned and ran Cozy Cottages for 24 years, running the cottages while they were on break from teaching. Elaine stayed busy. She taught exercise classes at Alton school, evenings, for several years. She also taught basic education to special needs students in Laconia, with her son John as her assistant. She was an active and humorous member of the Gilman Library Book Club for over a decade, and she enjoyed celebrating other Book Club members’ birthdays: Elaine didn’t forget to send cards to her many family and friends, and she enjoyed getting cards too. Elaine remained in touch with other teachers who had retired, going out for lunch as a group. In the last five years, she attended a bereavement group that she found very helpful (and also enjoyed the delicious desserts that were served as part of the luncheon.) Elaine loved to dress up and always had her hair and nails done, wore jewelry every day, and wore beautifully matched clothes. She loved going to the craft fair and buying shirts with bling. She had many collections that brought her joy, especially her Cardinal collection. Her favorite musician was Barry Manilow, and she enjoyed asking Alexa to play his tunes. Her many cats and dogs over the years brought her such happiness: in the last few years, Elaine enjoyed relaxing with her cat Ellie while using her electric blanket that she nicknamed,” the cat napper”.

Friends were so important to Elaine and she had wonderful friendships, spanning up to 70 years. Jeanne and John and “the angel girls” were a constant in her life, one that she appreciated so much, and her niece Claire and she had a special bond that only grew through the years.

She had the ability to chat with anyone, and if you overheard the conversation, you would think she was a great friend of the family. She loved to embellish, with hilarious results oftentimes.

Elaine leaves behind her son John and her daughter-in-law Susan from Alton Bay, New Hampshire, her grandsons Chris Langer, and Michael Langer and his wife Karla, and her great grandchildren Devin, Jacob, and Henry.
