Obituary

Edwin A. Bean of Rochester, NH passed away at his home on January 26, 2021.  Ed was born in Haverhill, MA on August 9, 1924.  He grew up on a farm in East Hampstead, NH with his parents, Norris Bean and Irma (Granton) Bean, and his sister Eleanor and brother Marshall.

Ed played baseball and basketball in high school and graduated from Hampstead High School in 1941.  Following high school he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a nose gunner on B-17 bombers during World War II.  He was stationed in England during the war and participated in campaigns in Normandy, Northern France, and the Rhineland.  He earned the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and Air Medal with 5 Bronze Stars for his service.

He was a dedicated husband, father and doting grandfather. As a father he coached his son Christopher's little league team and rooted on his son Jeff at all of his Special Olympics events.   He cared for his late wife Mary for many years in their home after she developed dementia.  To his older generation of grandchildren, Ed was known as Grampa Teddy, and then simply as Grampa to his younger grandchildren.  He loved to get down on the floor and joke around with his grandchildren, and read and play games with them.  He truly had a special gift with children and they all loved him dearly. His house was always open to family members, and at various times many of his stepchildren and nephews lived on the farm with him and his immediate family during times of need.

He was a skilled carpenter and chicken farmer, and lived at his farm for the last 50 plus years of his life.  He helped many family members and friends with home improvement projects over the years. He had a camp on Lake Winnipesauke for almost 30 years where he enjoyed a wonderful community of friends, kayaking with his son Jeff, and taking his family and friends water skiing and tubing and giving them tours of the lake.  Once the Braves moved out of Boston, he became a Red Sox fan and loved watching their games on television and going to the occasional game at Fenway Park.  Ed led an active lifestyle, continuing to take on carpentry work and cut and sell firewood well into his eighties.

Ed was pre-deceased his wife Mary, his brother Marshall, and his stepdaughter Sheila Sullivan.  He is survived by his sons Christopher and Jeffrey Bean, his stepsons John and Kevin Sullivan, his stepdaughters Anne Sullivan and Kathleen Lane, and 12 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

The family wishes to extend their sincere thanks to Cornerstone VNA of Rochester and would encourage anyone who would like to make a donation on his behalf to make it to this organization.
