WAKEFIELD — Retired Staff Sergeant Douglas W. Vanderpool, Jr., age 51, of Wakefield, passed away on Sept. 24, 2010, at his home after a sudden illness.
He was born in Portsmouth on Aug. 9, 1959, the son of Douglas W. and Barbara J. (Bowley) Vanderpool Sr. Raised in Hampton and had traveled all over in his military family; most recently has resided in Wakefield for 13 years coming from Fort Lewis in Washington State, after his retirement.
Doug served in the United States Army having worked as a career Master Mechanic and retired as an E-6 after 21 years. He was proud to serve his country in Kuwait and received many medals to include two Bronze Service Stars, Army Commendation Medal (second award) and the Kuwait Liberation medal. After retirement, he worked in Qatar for seven years as a civilian mechanic to continue his efforts to support the troops.
He was a member of the American Legion.
An avid outdoorsman he enjoyed hunting, shooting (expert marksmanship), landscaping and gardening. He loved his wife Kathy, his troops and his dogs: Tabius and Moe moe.
Survived by his wife of 22 years Mary Katherine "Kathy" (Couch) Vanderpool of Wakefield; father, Douglas W. and his wife Dorothy Vanderpool Sr., of Brookfield; two sons, Tech Sgt. Anthony "Tony" and wife Robin Vanderpool of United States Air Force in Colorado Springs, Colo.; Aaron J. Burton of Nashville, Tenn.; two sisters, Heidi J. McHatton of Somersworth and Julie J. Brock of Texas; one brother, Walter A. and wife Renee Vanderpool, of Newmarket; one grandson, Gabriel of Nashville, Tenn.; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be on Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, from 4 to 6 p.m. with military honors at 6 p.m. at the Peaslee Funeral Home, 2079 Wakefield in Sanbornville (Wakefield), NH.
