Donald Brian Scruton, 73, of Farmington, NH, known to many as “Donnie” and affectionately as “Long Beard,” passed away peacefully at home on July 16, 2026, surrounded by his family. Donald was born on October 23, 1952, in Rochester, NH, the son of Lloyd and Irene Scruton. He grew up in Farmington and graduated from Farmington High School. As a young man he worked at Varney’s Market, and he went on to spend many years at GE, where he remained until his retirement. He was the proud father of four beloved children from his first marriage to Ruth Scruton. He later married Frances Scruton, who survives him. An avid outdoorsman, Donald loved to hunt and fish, and he treasured nothing more than sharing those pursuits with his children and grandchildren. He hunted deer for many years, recently took a bear, and among his proudest moments was standing alongside his grandson when he got his first deer. Each year he and Frances looked forward to their fishing trip with family and friends, a tradition they held dear. Donald was also a passionate gardener and farmer at heart, a love he and Frances shared. Their garden filled nearly the entire yard, with every fruit and vegetable you could name. For a time he also kept a petting farm full of animals, and it was there that he and Frances first met. Above all, Donald was his family’s biggest fan. He rarely missed a chance to watch his children and grandchildren play sports, and cheered just as loudly for his beloved Boston teams. Donald is survived by his wife, Frances Scruton of Farmington; his children, Chris Scruton, Terra Martineau and her husband Dan, Aaron Scruton and his wife Michelle, and Bethany Thayer and her husband Jasper; his step-son Luther; his brother, Dennis Scruton and his spouse Joyce; his sister, Lisa Chikosky and her husband Randy, and his sister Nanci Gerrish; his grandchildren, Andrew, Ashlyn, Ryan, Daniel, Katie, Isaac, Silver, Ethan, Emmett, Maverick, and Anson, and his great-granddaughter, Kensley. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, including his dear friends James, Fred, and Bruce.He was preceded in death by his parents, Lloyd and Irene Scruton; his brother, Doug Scruton; and his brother-in-law, Charlie Gerrish. A celebration of life will be held at Chris Scruton’s house in New Durham, NH 03855, on August 22, 2026, at 2:00 PM. 352 Berry Road, New Durham NH 03855.
