IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Barbara J.
Goodwin
November 18, 1921 – November 19, 2022
Barbara J. (Tufts) Goodwin, beloved mother, grandmother and friend, died at the age of 101 on November 19, 2022, at the Studley Home in Rochester, New Hampshire, with her daughter by her side.
Born on November 18, 1921 and raised in Milton, NH and Middleton, NH, she was the daughter of the late Alice and John Tufts. Barbara was the 2nd born of four sisters: Phyllis, (Barbara) Thelma and Beverly. She resided in Rochester for 45 years, having previously resided in Milton for 37 years.
When she was born, the most common method of transportation was still the horse and buggy.
A beautiful 21-year-old, Barbara married Lloyd E. Goodwin on August 28th, 1942 They were married for 63 years when Lloyd passed at the age of 89. Together they built a simple, beautiful life. Barbara was the mother to five children: Lloyd, Sandra, James "Jimmy," Keith and Karen.
Barbara was a dedicated wife and mother. When the dinner bell rang, the five Goodwin children would quickly arrive at the table, ready to fill their bellies with whatever delicious meal their mother had prepared. To help support the family, Barbara looked after other neighborhood children and worked in a shoe shop for several years. Throughout her lifetime, she spent her summers climbing her parents blueberry mountain, Bunker Mountain, picking and consuming nutritious blueberries to which she credits her healthy longevity.
If you needed a splinter removed, a reassuring hug, a good laugh, someone to transform your grumpy baby or toddler into a delight (with her smile and a box of toys brought down from the attic) a partner for a trip to the grocery store, Barbara was always there.
She enjoyed spending family time at her camp in Shapleigh, ME. singing in the car on the rides to camp (when their children were small.) She also enjoyed joy rides, taking trips, gardening, canning, African Violets, Christmas cactus, and making her famous peanut butter fudge. She knitted sweaters, scarves, hats and mittens, socks and blankets. Barbara mowed her own lawn, shoveled snow and raked leaves right into her 90's.
Devoted to family, always up for a birthday party, sports games or graduations. She remembered every birthday and anniversary, and sent cards with beautiful penmanship. Always asked about the spouses and made them feel like they were an important part of the family. Her motto was "Family is everything." Loved visitors and always had many – "You are welcome anytime."
Survived by her two daughters: Sandra J. & husband Wayne Salisbury of Middleton and Karen A. & husband David Johnson of Milton and her three sons: Lloyd E. & wife Judah Goodwin, Jr. of Lakeland, FL, James R. & wife Elaine Goodwin of Rochester and Keith A. Goodwin of Middleton, 11 Grandchildren and 22 Great Grandchildren, 2 Great Great Grandchildren, also several Nieces and Nephews. Predeceased by her husband Lloyd, her sisters: Phyllis, Thelma and Beverly, and daughter-in-law: Rhonda Goodwin.
